I’ve been busy enjoying the last gasps of summer and it doesn’t get much better than a dip in the pool. When I was designing my Napa house with Phillip, we turned to the talented landscape architect Stephen Suzman and his project assistant Colin Jones. I knew that we wanted to have a long pool as I’m a serious swimmer and a former lifeguard and he helped make sure that its location was far from an afterthought. Well before the foundation was poured, he surveyed the property and guided me on the orientation of the house, the olive grove and the much-anticipated pool to maximize the glorious setting. I’m glad he did.
I very strongly felt the pool should lay parallel to the house respecting the living room’s proportions. Stephen disagreed and suggested it should become a water feature perpendicular to the room instead. The olive grove would be in front of the main house and separate a corridor to the guest cottage. Stephen was absolutely right. It gives the home a chic yet country feel which perfectly fits Napa living. It’s like being in nature, but sophisticated nature.
